Artemis

Artemis is an Ōtepoti Dunedin-based company specialising in traditional plant-based medicine, founded by Swiss Medical Herbalist Sandra Clair.

Named after the Greek goddess of the wilderness and protector of women and children, Artemis is built on the belief that plants hold the key to healing. Their approach empowers consumers to prevent illness through a daily regimen of self-care, using carefully formulated natural remedies.

Engaged by Special Group, I developed the design strategy for Artemis’ refreshed brand. The creative direction was inspired by the bookish qualities of the Materia Medica, a rare Renaissance medical text written in the 16th century by German pharmacist and physician Jacobus Theodorus Tabernaemontanus. Sandra Clair owns an original copy, and I was fortunate to see it in person.

To bring the brand to life, we balanced warm photography with intricate illustrations, breaking up the text to create an engaging, personal and visually rich experience. Through storytelling that educates and inspires, Artemis encourages people to care for their bodies every day - not just when they’re unwell.
